What is a palatal expander?

A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance that gradually widens the upper jaw  and helps reduce crowding in a narrow arch while a child is still growing. This creates space for proper tooth eruption and  can improve bite and nasal airway issues.

Palate expansion occurs when the growth plate in the middle of the palate is stretched and the two halves are pushed apart. As the two halves are spread, new bone is added.

This is done through a gradual process that does not cause pain. In younger patients, expansion may reduce the need for extractions or prevent impacted teeth. Crossbites not corrected during childhood may require surgery for correction in adulthood.

When is expansion recommended?

Dr. Ross may recommend an expander if your child has a narrow upper jaw, is in cross bite, there is considerable crowding of the permanent teeth, impacted teeth, or significant bite discrepancies.

What is expansion like?

The expander is attached to the upper molars and stays in place throughout treatment.  Most children adapt quickly.  Mild pressure is common but discomfort is typically minimal.  Expansion takes several weeks followed by a period where the appliance remains in place to allow the new bone to stabilize.  This is when the  expander  acts like a cast! 

Will my child need braces after an expander?

The answer is most likely yes, but not immediately.  Many kids who wear an expander return for braces months or years later to address rotations, open bites, and other bite discrepancies not corrected by expansion.  Treatment plans at Windham Orthodontics are customized for the healthiest, most stable result.  Families choose Dr. Ross for experience, trust, and personalized care.
