Phase I Orthodontics in Windham, NH

Early Orthodontic Treatment for Growing Smiles

The American Association of Orthodontist recommends a child’s  initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at age 7.  At this early age, treatment may not be necessary, but a consultation can anticipate the best time to begin treatment.  Sometimes the best time to begin orthodontic treatment is before all the permanent teeth have erupted.  Phase I orthodontic treatment allows Dr. Ross to address developing orthodontic concerns while your child is still growing, creating a healthier foundation for the teeth, jaws, and future smile.

At Windham Orthodontics, we provide Phase I orthodontics for children in Windham and throughout Southern New Hampshire.  Dr. Ross takes a thoughtful, individualized approach to determine whether early treatment is needed or whether it is best to simply monitor growth and development.

When is Phase I Orthodontics Recommended?

Early orthodontic treatment may be recommended when a child has concerns such as:

  • Crowded or severely overlapping teeth
  • Crossbite or significant bite problems
  • An underbite or excessive overbite
  • Jaw growth concerns
  • Significant spacing or erupting teeth that are blocked
  • Habits that may affect dental or jaw development

Not every child needs two phases of orthodontic treatment.  The goal of Phase I treatment is to address specific developmental concerns at the right time, while allowing the remaining permanent teeth and jaws to continue developing.

What happens after Phase I?

After phase I treatment, your child will enter a period of observation while their permanent teeth continue to erupt and their jaws develop.  When appropriate, a second phase of treatment can later fine tune the bite and alignment for a healthy, beautiful smile.
